What are fixed braces and why are they important?
Perfectly aligned teeth and a radiant smile often start with fixed braces—regardless of age! This orthodontic device is used to correct bite and tooth position irregularities. It allows precise tooth movement and long-lasting results.
Although the most common patients are children (parents usually bring them around age 7)and those with noticeable irregularities, it’s never too late to achieve a correct bite and boost your confidence.
Interestingly, high school and university students wear braces less often, even though this period is ideal for orthodontic treatment. If you are considering fixed braces, now is the perfect time to take the first step toward a lifelong smile!

Components of fixed braces:

Are you a candidate for fixed braces?
Fixed braces are an ideal solution for various orthodontic issues. You may be a candidate if you have:
– Crowded or crooked teeth
– Gaps between teeth (diastema)
– Deep bite (upper teeth overlap lower teeth more than normal)
– Open bite (space between upper and lower teeth when the jaw is closed)
– Crossbite (some upper teeth sit behind lower teeth)
The first step is to schedule an examination with a dentist. During the appointment, a detailed check-up will be done, impressions of your teeth will be taken, and the necessary X-rays will be explained.
In the following days, our specialist will analyze the X-rays and impressions to prepare a detailed treatment plan. At your next appointment, we will explain how your treatment will proceed, its duration, and expected results.
Do I need both upper and lower braces?
Nowadays, patients approach orthodontic treatment more seriously than before, which leads to better outcomes. Regular check-ups and adjustments are key to successful teeth alignment, and in most cases, wearing braces on both jaws is recommended to achieve optimal balance and aesthetic harmony.

Eating with Fixed Braces: What to Eat and What to Avoid?
When wearing fixed braces, it is important to cut foods like apples, carrots, or toast into small pieces to protect the brackets and wires. Hard or chewy foods such as sandwiches and meat should also be cut into smaller portions before eating.
Avoid sticky and hard snacks like popcorn, caramel, chewing gum, and nuts, as they can damage the braces or get stuck between wires. Never chew ice or other hard objects while wearing braces.
Oral Hygiene: How to Properly Clean Your Teeth with Braces?
Maintaining oral hygiene with fixed braces requires a careful routine:
– Rinse your mouth with water to remove food debris from the braces.
– Use a toothbrush with a small head and soft bristles, cleaning teeth and brackets carefully, especially under and above the wires.
– Use interdental brushes to clean hard-to-reach spaces between brackets and wires.
– Use dental floss with a threader to remove plaque between teeth under the wires.
– A water flosser helps to remove food particles and bacteria from the narrowest areas.
– Finally, rinse your mouth with fluoride mouthwash for extra protection against cavities.
Follow this routine after every meal, while thorough brushing should be done morning and night.
Life After Braces: What Are Retainers For?
After fixed braces are removed, the orthodontist will prescribe retainers – clear aligner trays or wire devices that keep teeth in their new position. Without retainers, teeth can easily shift back, especially during the first few months.
Retainers should be worn all the time initially, except during eating and brushing, then only at night. The duration depends on the orthodontist’s advice but often lasts a year or more, with occasional use afterward to maintain permanent results. Consistent retainer use is key to long-lasting effects.
Types of Fixed Braces Most Commonly Used

Metal (Steel) Fixed Braces for Teeth
An excellent and effective choice for fast teeth correction and achieving a beautiful smile. Due to their durability and affordability, they are the most common option. Extremely popular among teenagers, and with the possibility to choose different colors of elastic bands at each adjustment, they allow for a unique and fun look.

Estetska (nevidljiva) proteza za zube
The ideal choice if discretion is your priority. Aesthetic braces let you straighten your teeth without compromising your professional appearance, making them a favorite among adult patients. The brackets are made from materials that blend with the tooth color, making the braces barely noticeable.
The two most commonly used types of aesthetic braces are:
Ceramic Braces: The brackets are tooth-colored, making them significantly less visible than metal ones. They offer a great balance between aesthetics and cost.
Sapphire Braces: The ultimate in aesthetics. The brackets are made from transparent, crystal-clear sapphire, making them almost completely invisible. They do not change color during treatment and provide maximum discretion.
