What are fissures and why should they be sealed?

If you take a closer look at your teeth, you will notice small grooves and pits on the chewing surfaces – these are called fissures and pits. They are often very narrow and deep, making them difficult to clean thoroughly, even with a toothbrush.

If teeth are not brushed regularly and properly, food particles easily get trapped in these areas, creating an ideal environment for bacteria growth, which eventually leads to tooth decay. To prevent food from accumulating in fissures, dental sealants are applied in children to make chewing surfaces smooth, reducing the risk of cavities.

Aftercare and long-term protection

Dental sealants are especially important for the first permanent molars (“six-year molars”), which usually erupt around the age of six. At this age, children often do not brush their teeth effectively and frequently consume sweets, making these teeth particularly vulnerable to decay.

The procedure is quick (less than 10 minutes), completely painless, and simple:

List - IconThe tooth is cleaned using a special brush and paste
List - IconThe tooth surface is treated with an acid solution to prepare it for the sealant
List - IconA thin layer of sealant is applied and hardened using a special light

Aftercare and long-term protection

Dental sealants provide excellent protection against cavities, but it is important to remember that regular brushing and good oral hygiene remain essential.

Sealants significantly reduce the risk of tooth decay but do not eliminate it entirely. It is recommended to have the sealants checked by a dentist every 1–2 years - and reapplied if necessary.

Regular dental check-ups help detect and prevent potential issues at an early stage.
